Sunday Morning Jinx Vanquished
Cubs 3, Bombers 2

Cambridge Cubs

Newton Bombers
Sunday mornings have not been kind to the Cubs this season. On Sunday mornings, this team has been sluggish at best with a record of 3-5. This morning at St. Pete the Cubs struggled to put runs on the board, even with eleven hits total. The Cubs tallied 3 runs through nine innings. The first run came in the third inning with Ish Laboy scoring on a sac fly by Greg Elbaum. The second run came in the with Mike Colombo scoring on a double by Robert Belinky that sailed over the head of the Bombers left fielder. The third run came in the ninth with two outs. Johnny Ace reached on an error by the shortstop, Ish running for Johnny stole second, then a clutch single to right by Greg Elbaum drove in what turned out to be the winning run.

One would think that timely hitting was the story of the day, in reality it was a small part of the day. This contest was settled on the field by Cubs pitching and defense. Jamie Waters started and pitched 7+ solid innings, holding the Bombers to one run and only 4 hits. The Bombers looked off balance and confused often and, although only notching 4 K's, Waters was sharp and seemed to make the toughest pitches with runners either on second or third all game. In the eighth inning, Waters walked the first two batters then hit the next to load the bases, out of gas in 93+ degree heat and 100% humidity (wussy!) after 7+ strong innings. Tony Preteroti relieved. He started off with a walk, bringing in the Bombers first run. Then, with the bases loaded and no outs, Billy Burton made a diving stab of a one hop line drive, got up and gunned down the runner at the plate to record the first out. Next, Jeff Meyer at first on a slow roller up the line pegged out the second Bomber at the plate. Then Doucette at second recorded the last out of the inning on an one hopper with the throw to Meyer at first. In the ninth, the Cubs again were in trouble. The Bombers scored a run on a solid single through the hole between second and first with one out. Then, with the tying run at third and the winning run at second with only one out, Preteroti struck out the next two batters to secure the save and the victory for the Cubs. Its 15th of the year, a new high point for wins in the team's history!

Cubs Unload in Eighth, Avoid Back to Back Losses, Improve to 13-3

Newton Bombers

The Cubs improved their record to 13-3 behind yet another strong outing by Duke Guthrie. Guthrie gave up a scant 3 hits and fanned 17 on his way to victory number 7. Oddly, as stated in Guthrie's contract under incentive clause number 2, "...with the seventh win of the season "the Cubs" dba Cambridge Cubs baseball organization, shall purchase one silent buttler for exclusive use by the signer of this contract". Cubs management currently is seeking out silent buttler salesmen. Sources indicate that Guthrie could not be more pleased.

The game was much closer than the score would indicate. That is until the 8 run 8th by the Cubs. Scoring began in the second inning, when Bruce Anderson and Joe Doucette executed a perfect hit and run. With two outs, Anderson (who was on second base after smashing a monster double to right field) took off for third on the pitch. Meanwhile at the plate Doucette slapped a single into the vacated hole at second base, plating Anderson and giving the Cubs a 1-0 lead. The lead would be short lived, as the Bombers plated their only run in the top of the third, aided by an error by Doucette who thought it would be easier to catch a ground ball with his shoulder as opposed to his glove.

The Doucette/Anderson combo clicked again in the fifth. With Anderson on third, a sac fly to right by Doucette plated Anderson with what would turn out to be the winning run. Then in the sixth a clutch two out single by Damon Smith knocked in two more runs to stake Guthrie and the Cubs to a three run lead.

In the eighth inning, the Cubs left little doubt as to the game's outcome. Prompted by Damon Smith's "show no mercy, take no prisoners" creed of demoralization, the Cubs batted around and piled on 8 runs. The inning was highlighted by a bases loaded two run single by Greg Elbaum and Mike Colombo's two hits in the inning. Smith added another two run single as if to emphasize his above motto.

The Cubs moved to 13-3 with the victory. Two wins shy of breaking a franchise record for wins.

Next up is a road game against the defending champion Revere Lugnuts on Sunday, July 24th at 10:00 AM.

Cubs Move to 12-2 Via 14-8 Win Over Red Sox

Newton Red Sox

Cambridge Cubs

The difference between night and day was perhaps the smallest of the contrasts on display during the second and final game between the Cambridge Cubs and the Newton Red Sox. 10 innings were required to decide the outcome of the first game. Tonight's game lasted but 7. The first game unfolded on a hot, humid, hazy and sunny Sunday in Newton. Tonight's game played out under an overcast Thursday night in Somerville. First game saw a total of 7 runs from both teams over the couse of its 10 innings. The 7th run in this game was plated before the bottom of the 2nd was over. Game one was a pitcher's duel. This, clearly, was not.

Red Sox opened big, stacking some timely hitting on opening back to back walks to the tune of 3 runs. The Cubs failed to respond in the bottom half of the opening frame, stranding a base runner at 3rd. Perhaps they were saving their
runs up for a 6 run 2nd that would grab them a 6-3 lead.

That lead would not prove long lasting, as Newton tied it up via another 3 spot in the next half inning.

The game would see-saw back and forth, 8-6, 8-8 until the Cubs put up 6 in the bottom of the 6th to go up 14-8, a lead they would not relinquish.

Cambridge batted well all the way up and down the lineup, going .424 as a team for the game. Extra base hits from Johnny Aceto, Greg Elbaum, and Damon Smith highlighted the 14 hits churned out by the Cub offense, delighted to be able to help Duke Guthrie to his 6th win of the year.

Ish Laboy makes Poppa proud!

In what could turn out to be the longest drive for any Cubs fan ever, Ish Laboy, Sr. made the long trek from NY, NY to see Ish the Younger have a career evening at the plate. Making his poppa proud, Ish slammed 2 triples to the tune of 6 RBI and added 2 runs scored for good measure. Thus leading the Cubs to a 16-2 victory over the Orioles of Wellesley.

Waters, Doucette, Burton, Colombo and Guthrie also added two hits each to help Jamie Waters pick up his first win of the season.

Steve Ceppi saw his first mound time of the 2005 season, pitching a solid 6th inning that featured 2 Ks and the now traditional Ceppi first pitch of the inning, a fast ball that bounced off the plate.... Tradition is good...

Not much else to say. I suppose we bring up the fact that the Cubs own "Dean of Schooling Pitchers" Damon Smith slammed his 5th double of the season with 2 RBI attached, but it's hard to ignore his game-time tardiness (without a note from home or a Doctor) While the double and RBI were nice, we have to also award two demerits and a week's detention to Mr Smith, and yes this does go on his permanent record.

A nail biter at Trum. A weary but tough Yankee line-up, playing in its second game of the day, gave the Cubs all they could handle on an overcast Sunday afternoon at Trum. Tony Preteroti got the start for the Cubs and provided 5 innings, striking out 4 while surrendering 4 hits and 3 free passes.

At one point, he was set up to notch the win, since the Cubs led 5-4 after 5.

Over the next two innings, however, the Yankees would add 3 more, and entered the bottom of the 7th and final inning with a 7-5 lead. That deficit could have been a lot larger, if not for an unlikely defensive development.

Already trailing by 2 runs in the top of the 7th, with two Yankees on and nobody out, the Cubs turned a triple play to snuff the Yankee rally . The play began with a 6-4-3 DP. Jeff Meyer finished it off with a 1st to 3rd throw to notch the 3rd out of the play by nailing the Yankee runner, who had over turned the corner from third to home.

After two quick outs to start the bottom of the 7th, the Cubs were down to their final out. Johnny Aceto got things started with a clutch single down the 3rd base line. Ish and Jaime Waters reached to load the bases. Ish Laboy tied the game on a gutsy play, scoring from 3rd on a close play at the plate brought on by a passed ball that didn't get far enough away. Damon Smith delivered a full count exploding hop single to knock in the game-winner for the Cubs.

Billy Burton picked up his 2nd Win of the year, moving to 2-0 via a 2 IP, 3 Runs (1 Earned), 1K, 1BB, 3H line.

Carlos Quinones started for the Yanks and pitched 3 solid innings and added an RBI double to help his own cause, but had to leave the game after his 4th HB.

A VERY tight game whose outcome could easily gone the other way. The Cubs were fortunate to move to 9-2. But, good teams make their own good fortune and have a knack for winning games when they aren't playing their best.

Next up for the Cubs is an 8:00 game at Trum against the Orioles on Thursday, June 23rd.

The Cubs bats came to life last night in Chelsea. Cubs batters belted out a season high 16 hits and 13 runs. Damon Smith led the way with two hits including a double and 3 RBI. However, Smith failed to throw a runner out at the plate for the first time in three games, leaving the harsh Cub fandom grumbling and asking for ticket refunds. KMac continued his steady performance at the plate notching 2 hits and an RBI. One of those hits, a blast that drove the Angel center fielder to the wall in right, missed leaving the park by a foot. Instead KMac had to settle for an RBI single. Duke Guthrie also added two hits and two RBI to prove that Cubs pitchers can do more than pitch. Greg Elbaum was a perfect 2-2 with a double, RBI and a Run.

Leading the Cubs in the power department, Billy Burton and Joe Doucette each added triples to the Cubs attack. Burton's was a shot to dead center and Doucette's was a blast to left center. Rounding out the scoring with an unlikely event, Doucette added a steal of THIRD base....lottery ticket purchases may be in order...

Kmac picked up his third win of the year...

The evening also saw the return of "Old Johnny". We all know "Old Johnny" and are certain that littlest Cubs fan "Timmy" someplace uttered through teary eyes..."say it ain't so Johnny"...."Little Timmy" need not weep for the Cubs, as we moved to 8-2.

Fighting through brutal heat and humidity, the Cubs ended up on the short end of a 4-3 extra innings outcome on a shadeless Sunday in Newton. With temperatures and humidity both well into the 90s, the game became a bit of a war of attrition. Duke got the start, and went 7, striking out 7. He dodged trouble throughout his outing, only surrendering 3 runs (1 earned) to a quality hitting Red Sox squad that strung together 7 hits and earned 5 free passes in their time against Guthrie. Outfield defense was again strong for the Cubs, with Damon Smith and Bruce "Almighty" Anderson both notching big assists.

Facing an effective Newton hurler rendered all the more effective by cow pasture length infield grass that turned anything hit on the ground into an easy dribbler, the Cubs managed to scrabble together a run in the early going via back to back hits by Anderson and Jeff Meyer. The Red Sox answered back in the next frame to square the score where it remained until the 7th, when Newton plated two.

Trailing by two heading into the 9th, the Cubs worked into a highly dramatic 2 out situation, with Kevin McGovern (who had quite the fine day at the office, going 2-3 at the plate and providing 1 inning of scoreless relief) and Joe Doucette in scoring position, Robert Belinky at the plate. Belinky demonstrated that good things assuredly do happen when you put the ball in play, scoring two to tie the game via his ground ball that the Red Sox infield couldn't handle.

Time ran out for the Cubs in the bottom of the 10th, with the Red Sox scoring the winning run on a single that came with 2 outs, the bases loaded and a full count.

While a loss is always disappointing, particularly when each player sweats off approx 10lbs of water in the process, the game was well played on both sides, and the Cubs gave a quality Newton club all they wanted (and then some) . As the Bard says, "sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains."

Gutsy effort on everyone's part, circle July 7th on your calendar for the rematch!

They say pitching and defense win ballgames. If this is the case, then Sunday's tilt against the crosstown rival Cambridge Warriors proved this point to indeed be true. The steamy Sunday saw KMac dominate the Warrior offense, giving up only 4 hits and 2 runs (one earned) and adding 10k's through 7 1/3 innings. KMac also added some clutch K's, notably whiffing a particular Warrior shortly after having his life threatened, suitably embarrassing him on a nasty curve, adding insult to injury. Jamie Waters picked up the save with 1 2/3 scoreless and hitless innings, preserving the win for the Cubs and Kmac.

The other story of the day was the defense. Damon Smith was the star of the day, dishing out detention to would be warrior hits and runs. First, he provided a spectacular diving catch of a certain RBI single to stifle a warrior rally late in the game, then added an outfield assist to gun down another at the plate. Johnny Ace finished the play at the plate with a bare-handed catch of the throw from Smith and provided a diving tag to cut down the runner at the plate. Suitably, the game ended on a 6-4-3 double play. Tony Preteroti to Ish Laboy to Robert Belinky, who finished the play with by digging out Ish's throw with a scoop that would make George "Boomer" Scott proud (or perhaps Don Mattingly if viewed form the Kmac, Ish, Damon, Belinky perspective)

At the plate the Cubs were clutch. With one out in the 9th, Mike Colombo began the inning with a solid single. Then, after a phantom catch for an out was overturned on an Ish groundball, Jaime Waters provided the finishing touch in the 9th with a 2RBI single to plate Colombo and Ish.

The anticipated match up of aces lived up to its billing in the early going, but the Cubs' Duke Guthrie blinked last, if he could be said to have blinked at all, holding the Warriors scoreless through 8 innings, striking out 13 while allowing only 1 hit and 3 free passes. The hard throwing Matt Williams took the hill for the Warriors, and kept the Cubs offense silent through the first two frames, with the only base runners coming via hard earned hit batsmen. Steve Ceppi changed all that in the third inning, opening the scoring with the first of his hits of the evening. By the end of the evening, Ceppi had tallied 3 hits and 3 RBI to pace the Cub offense.

The Cubs added on 2 more runs in the fifth. Control issues proved to be Williams' undoing, issuing 5 walks in addition to hitting 3 batters, he left the game after 6 and was saddled with the loss.

The Warrior bullpen may have been watching too much Red Sox baseball of late, as it allowed 6 runs in the eighth inning to bring the final score to 11-0.

Tonight's game brought a welcome return to action for Jaime Waters, who relieved Duke for a scoreless 9th and reached base in all of his plate appearances. Billy Burton crushed a double for the only Cub extra base hit of the evening.

This game was much closer than the final score would indicate, and the final contest of the season series between the two Cantabridgian teams in the league shapes up to be a good one, slated for Sunday, June 5th 9:00 AM at Rindge Field.

The Cubs unbeaten streak came to an end on a cold and drizzling Sunday morning in Billerica, coming up on the short end of a 6-5 final. Billy Burton started for the Cubs and provided six highly effective innings, striking out four, while walking 3 and allowing 4 hits. The Braves were opportunistic throughout, making the Cubs pay for their 3 errors to the tune of 3 unearned runs.

A see-saw affair, the Cubs trailed early, then briefly held a two run lead courtesy of a 3 run 4th that featured a 2 RBI double by Bruce Anderson, but saw that lead quickly disappear when the Braves responded with 3 runs of their own in the 5th. The Cubs tied the game with a 2 run eight inning, setting the stage for more late inning drama.

It seems that the baseball gods had a lesson in "can't win all the close ones" in store for the Cubs, who went scoreless in their half of the 9th, setting up a situation where the Braves had to be shut down to continue play. A 1 out hit against a drawn in infield and outfield scored the winning run from third base to hand the Cubs their first loss of the year.

Despite the disappointment of the outcome, highlights, in addition to Burton's pitching, were: Joe Doucette's good day at the dish (2-4, RBI), Anderson continuing to swing a hot bat, and Duke Diggler's crafty pick off move (2 runners nailed)..

Unfortunately, since they have Memorial Day weekend off, the Cubs have until June 2nd to savor the bitter taste of defeat, at which time they get a chance to get back to their winning ways at the friendly confines of Trum Field against their crosstown rivals, the Cambridge Warriors.

Returning to their old stomping grounds of Rindge Field for the first time in the 2005 season, the Cubs walked away unblemished following a tight affair against a quality Viper squad. Rain that was predicted the entire weekend held off, allowing the contest to be played to completion. Cooperation by the weather to allow the game to be played in its entirety was fortuitous, since the 9th inning ended up holding high drama.

The Cubs led throughout the early going, sprinkling in runs in the 2nd and the 5th off the bats of Tony Preteroti and Billy Burton. Despite not having his best fastball to rely on, Duke “Diggler” Guthrie kept the Vipers off the board through eight, striking out ten, walking seven and yielding five hits en route to the complete game victory, moving his record to 3-0 on the year.

A wildly inconsistent strike zone "shockingly" plagued both squads, leading to a disproportionate number of called third strikes, swings at balls that batters knew to be out of the strike zone, and frustrating walks yielded by pitchers. At least the home plate umpiring was consistently inconsistent. Equally bad for both teams, it did not effect the outcome, but was noteworthy.

The Cubs carried a 2-0 lead into the 9th that the Vipers eradicated via walks, bleeders and opportunistic base running leading to two runs, one earned. After the final out of the top of the inning was recorded with the game squared at two, teams were informed that due to time considerations, the next half inning would be the last played and, if the Cubs did not score, the game would end in a tie.

The do or tie situation quickly awakened the Cub offense. Joe Doucette drew a one out walk, and was pinch run for by a recently testicularly tested Greg Elbaum. Greg advanced to 2nd when Damon Smith singled on a 3-2 pitch. (To be strictly accurate, Greg advanced about 10 feet past 2nd base, then crawled back to the bag after slipping, but he ended up safely on 2nd, and that is all that matters…) After being granted new life courtesy of a dropped foul pop on the third base line, Jeff Meyer drove Elbaum home with the game winning single.

As has been the case all season, the Cubs never quit, and found a way to win when the game was on the line. Strassmann threw a solid 8 for the Vipers, but was barely bested by a gutsy Cubs squad. Guthrie tightened up when he had to throughout the game, keeping North Reading off the board, despite a good number of runners reaching scoring position.

Next up for the Cubs is another Sunday morning contest against the Boston Braves of Franklin at Locke Field in Billerica.

The ineradicable Cubs strike again...!

The Mets overcame an early Cub 2-0 lead with 6 runs in the third inning. However, as is the case with the Cubs v.2005, no opponent's lead is safe. This adage was once again followed by the resolute adopted sons of Cambridge. Tony Preteroti started for the Cubs, throwing 5 solid innings and was better than his pitching line would otherwise indicate. A puzzling strikezone by the the homeplate umpire added up to several walks and long counts. This, along with several less than solid hits helped the Mets put up 6 runs in the third. Oddly, even with the amorphous strikezone Tony struck out the side in the third.

The Cubs offensive output remained dormant until the sixth inning when, sparked by Mike Colombo's hustle on a ball booted by first base, the Cubs put up two runs. After two outs in the inning, and a walk by Damon Smith, Jeff Meyer missed going yard (at Trum) by 5 feet with a blast down the left field line. He settled for a double and 2 RBI.

In the seventh, with one out recorded, the Cubs once again sprung to life with four consecutive singles by Guthrie, Elbaum, KMac and Colombo. KMac's and Colombo's singles each drove in a run with Colombo bringing in the go ahead run. A double by Damon Smith plated two more to round out the scoring and comeback.

Billy Burton notched his first win of the season, throwing an impressive 6th and 7th. Solid in relief, Burton fanned four and added a pickoff of a runner at second. In the bottom of the seventh, Burton whiffed the side. Unflappable, he struck out the final batter looking with the bases loaded to secure the victory and bring the Cubs to 4-0 to start the season.

Next up for the Cubs is a 9:00 contest versus the Vipers, Sunday, May 15 at Rindge Field.

Cubs win 6-2 behind solid pitching from KMac and Duke. Kmac started the game and lasted into the 6th. After questioning the home plate umpire's ability to call strikes and his weight control issues, however, McGovern spent the rest of the game in the cheap seats, located next to the Trum port-o-potty.

Duke nailed down his first save, and added 10K's in 4 innings of relief to seal the win for KMac and the Cubs.

The Cubs fielding was much improved from the last game at Trum. Tony P turned a nice play to take away a hit on a sharp grounder up the middle and Belinky snagged a liner down the line to deprive an Angel of a double.

Bruce and Damon once again led the way on the offense combining for 5 hits, 4 runs, 4 SB and 3 RBI...someone please remind these two that we only renegotiate contracts in the off season...

A solid team effort overall to beat a tough Angel team.

Duke Guthrie recorded an astonishing, record-setting, amazing 22Ks, scattering 3 hits and 2 walks en route to a complete game shutout of the Quincy Grays on a perfect night in Chelsea.

A well played affair by both clubs, the Cubs opened it up with a 4 run 3rd inning that featured hits by Michael Colombo, Ish Laboy, and rookie Bruce "Almighty" Anderson.

Anderson's two out double in the inning plated three, giving the Cubs a four run lead they would never relinquish.

On the strength of the gem thrown by Guthrie, a single run proved to be all the Cubs would need to notch their 2nd victory to move to 2-0 on the season.

Damon Smith provided a 2-3 night, with a triple, walk and two runs scored.

Cubs win 9-8 with 4 runs in the bottom of the ninth!

Duke and Kmac combined for 9 K's. Duke drove in the tying runs with 2 outs in the ninth with single up the middle. Johnny Ace delivered the winning run on a ground ball to short that was dropped by the second baseman on the force to second. Steve Ceppi (running for Duke) scored as second base held the ball.

The Cubs rookies proved to be the difference as Duke picked up the win and the games tying RBI in his Cubs debut. Greg Elbaum and Bruce Anderson each scored twice and Damon Smith scored once.

Steve Ceppi seemed to be on base all night, serving as courtesy runner for just about everyone on the team.

Ok...really just Duke and sometimes Kevin but on his own linescore he stole two bases.

On the downside Cubs defense began the game and the season on shaky ground by posting 6 errors in the first two innings.

The D improved in the last seven by only posting one error, a 1-6-3 DP and some nice plays by Billy Burton at third.

An exciting start to the season!
