McGovern goes first for new club
By John Connolly
Sunday, May 27, 2007 - Updated: 02:11 AM EST
If you’re starting up a new club, you’d be wise to make Kevin McGovern your ace.
The 36-year-old right-hander made history last week when he went the distance to earn the first victory for new Yawkey League entry the Malden Bulldogs. It came less than two years after McGovern pitched his former club, the Chelsea Royals, to that franchise’s first win.
“Yeah, don’t know if it’s ever been done before in the Yawkey League,” said McGovern, now in his 12th season and fourth team after also playing for the Brighton Black Sox and Savin Hill.
“I think when I started out in 1995 with (Brighton), it was a pretty good powerhouse that won back-to-back titles, and it was a little tough to get playing time. It takes a while to break in. I was probably the 25th option on the bench. I didn’t come into the league tearing it up. I guess I’ve gotten better with age. I’m 36 now and I have kids on the team that are only 18 (years old). It’s a pretty big age gap. It does make it fun. It lets me compete with kids who are still in college.”
McGovern graduated from Xaverian High School in Middletown, Conn., before attending Northeastern, where he studied physical therapy. He currently operates a physical therapy business at three Greater Boston sites, and last year, he served as the physical therapist for the Nashua Pride of the independent Can-Am League.
“I did that last year (with the Pride) but it was way too much of a time committment,” he said. “I was probably at 120 games last year, and my wife (Elizabeth) was ready to kill me. I miss the Pride, though. (Manager) Butch Hobson is one of the better human beings to work with. I grew up in Connecticut and I hated Butch because I’m a Yankees fan, but he later played a couple of years with the Yankees, so I gave him absolution.”
McGovern has quite a pitching repertoire. He employs a two-seam fastball, cut fastball, changeup, curve and slider.
And after enduring four knee operations and an ankle surgery, his physical therapy experience comes in handy.
“I think it’s done with smoke and mirrors at my age,” he said. “The first couple of steps out of the car are tough. I very rarely throw a four-seam because I don’t get anybody out. My best pitch is the changeup because it might make my 50 mph fastball look great.”

Fare Thee Well E-Baum
Elbaum's departure will be felt in every aspect. Enthusiasm and love of the game infectious. Speed constantly a threat. While it is true that you can't steal first, being an adept enough bunter can make it seem possible. (When you don't bunt the ball directly into your eye socket, that is...) |

Logistics have cost the Cubs a valued friend and teammate. The pull of western skies (although presumably a little less far west than wherever the hell Meyer lives) has become too strong, as the math of nearly four hours of driving for each game has ceased to work out. How he made it add up for two seasons is a mystery worthy of Fermat.
