masked & anonymous

Rented the title in question, with low expectations(rapidly realizing that they are the secret to life). Was pleasantly shocked at how enjoyable it ended up being. It opens with an energetic Japanese cover of My Back Pages that would have nestled in nicely with Lost In Translation if Sofia could have swung the licensing. This track, coupled with its associated imagery, sets the tone for a song driven, highly stylized jaunt through what might seem at first blush to be familiar territory. Hearing the urgent emoting and familiar melodic and rhythmic elements delivered in an unfamiliar language serves as bellwether for what is to come. All of the themes familiar to fans of Dylan's work appear, but are given a much different treatment due to the affordances of the cinematic medium.

Woven throughout the film are well chosen versions of Dylan's songs performed by him and others. It is structured with a point/counterpoint alternating between dramatic performance and song. The inclusion of Blind Willie McTell, performed by Dylan himself over a haunting backdrop of appropriately stark and hopeless visuals is inspired and worth the price of a rental on its own. This song had always been a personal favorite and its smug inclusion on mixes had always served as a handy “you think you know Dylan from what you have heard on the radio and the two albums of his that you own” call to back catalog investigation. For those not sated of their Blind Willie McTell jones by the version in the film (which is omitted from the soundtrack, but is available on Bootleg Series, Vols. 1-3 (the film version, featuring Marc Knopfler on guitar, and Dylan on Piano and vocals) and The Band's under appreciated 1993 Robbie Robertson-less effort Jericho. (Rick Danko takes vocal duties on this version, bringing all the midlife pain of a life that peaked at 35 to bear.)

    Other musical highlights include:
  • One more Cup of Coffee - Crushingly beautiful rendition by Turkish "superstar?" by Sertab Erener
  • Like a Rolling Stone - Italian Rap Version by Articolo 31
  • My Back Pages - from the Ramones 1993 Acid Eaters
  • If You See Her, Say Hello - touching Italian version (Non Dirle Che Non E' Cosi') by Francesco de Gregori
  • Everything performed by Dylan and his current crackerjack touring band

So, separate from the excellent music, this film has much to offer. Blessed with a veritable all-star cast, it features inspired turns by Jeff Bridges, Penélope Cruz, John Goodman, Jessica Lange and Luke Wilson in sizable roles, where they prove to be more than up to the challenge presented by the highly stylized dialogue which requires line readings somewhere between theatrical and performance art. The tone and presentation of the narrative elements is a courageous gambit, and this decision is most likely where most critical support was lost. Ultimately it seems only appropriate for a fable to be told fabulistically, and Larry Charles deserves a great deal of praise for eliciting novel and powerful work that clearly stretched the chops of the well-known and oft heralded cast. Smaller, but equally wonderful, turns by Ed Harris, Val Kilmer, Cheech Marin, Chris Penn, Christian Slater, Giovanni Ribisi, and particularly Mickey Rourke round out the film.

Highly recommended without qualification or hesitation.

shameful joy

is still joy, right?

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are shown on a screen during the 24th Annual Golden Raspberry Awards on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, in Santa Monica, Calif. The movie took all six top trophies in the annual dishonorable-mention awards. Golden Raspberry Awards voters picked ``Gigli'' as 2003's worst picture, Affleck as worst actor, Lopez as worst actress and the two as worst screen couple. ``Gigli'' filmmaker Martin Brest also took the Razzies for worst director and screenplay.

hingis still has it

"People ask me about a comeback, but look at Venus. I don't want to end up like that even if I was healthy. The train is moving fast," said the Swiss winner of five grand slam single titles, who is in Dubai to conduct some coaching clinics.

"Venus hasn't shown anything right now. What makes them strong is if they're together, but for one alone it's difficult."

and you get some scary synergies and something you don't want to see gaining momentum.

sometimes i'm going about my day and all of a sudden, like an electrical shock it will go through me, "I FUCKING HATE GRADY LITTLE"

The world needs another take on the idiocy that is Grady Little like it needs a hole in its collective head so it will be spared that . But it is worth noting the lack of support afforded by Pedro below. While not avoiding the "ultimately, I threw the pitches" responsibility, his message still comes through loud and clear.

Martinez said the Yankees deserve to be considered divisional favorites after stunning the Sox, who were five outs away from advancing to the World Series, in Game 7 of the ALCS. It was Martinez, of course, who couldn't hold the 5-2 lead with two outs in the eighth inning at Yankee Stadium.

``We lost and I'm fully responsible,'' he said. ``There's no one to blame. They won, we lost. We'll just try again."

Martinez said, however, that former manager Grady Little visited the mound only to ask him if he had the strength to retire Hideki Matsui, with a runner on and the lead narrowed to 5-3. Matsui doubled and Jorge Posada followed with a game-tying blooped double.

``It wasn't if I wanted to stay (in),'' Martinez said. ``I was asked a question if I wanted to pitch to Matsui or not. I was shocked I stayed in the last two or three hitters.''

Martinez said the stunning collapse won't fuel him this season and indicated Schilling's presence won't do so, either.
``I don't expect anyone to push me,'' Martinez said. ``I push myself. I don't need any extra push.''

more from the "why do you think they call it dope" file

Officers find two tons of pot in garbage truck
BY BILL HESS Herald/Review

COCHISE COUNTY - The erratic driving of a garbage truck led to the arrest of two men for transporting and possessing more than two tons of marijuana.
Arizona Department of Public Safety Sgt. Steve Tritz said he was suspicious of the truck as he followed it beginning near Ramsey Road and Highway 92 around 4 p.m. Tuesday.
"It got my attention," Tritz said. "He was driving slow and failing to signal."
As Tritz watched, the driver pulled the garbage truck off the road and watched traffic go by.
"I normally don't get involved in traffic stops," said Tritz, a DPS criminal investigator assigned to the Sierra Vista office.
But this time, he called ahead and asked that the truck be pulled over because of traffic infractions.
DPS Officer J. Eccles stopped the vehicle north of Huachuca City. Tritz joined Eccles at the scene of the stop.
The driver identified himself as Brian Rivera Martinez, Tritz said, adding there also was a passenger in the truck, Michael Trejo Duran Sr. The driver had no identification, but Duran had Arizona and California driver's licenses.
Martinez said he didn't know how to operate the truck, Tritz said.
The officers requested that U.S. Border Patrol agents with a drug-sniffing dog come to the scene. When the dog arrived, it almost immediately alerted on to the truck, Tritz said.
Martinez and Duran also were nervous, more than they should have been if it was a routine traffic stop, Tritz said.
"Both were very tense and watched us (all the officers on the scene)," he said.
Climbing to the top of the garbage truck, Tritz said he could see inside the area where trash would have been placed and spotted what appeared to be bundles of marijuana.
"I could smell the garbage and the dope," he said.
Some garbage had been put in the holding area of the truck so if the back was opened all that would have been seen would have been trash.
Tritz eventually drove the truck to the fenced in lot at the Sierra Vista office where it was emptied, revealing 178 bundles of marijuana weighing 4,112 pounds. The street value of the drugs is $3,289,600.
The truck is registered to a California leasing company, and Tritz said he called the company to get instructions on how to drive the vehicle.
"It was the first time I've ever driven a garbage truck," he said.

A man from the California company said his organization was in the process of repossessing the truck.
Martinez, who said he is 28, and Duran, 38, both claim they are Tucson residents. They are being held in the Cochise County Jail, each on $30,000 bond. Both are charged with knowingly transporting marijuana for sale and possession of marijuana for sale. Martinez also was charged with a number of traffic violations, Tritz said.
The investigation continues.

moderately more difficult than the last pop quiz, signficantly more groan induction upon completion.

reading is fundamental

"I've always loved to read, but sometimes I go for a year without reading a book because I forget to, or I don't have a book that I can get into easily," she said. "Recently I've been reading a lot more."

norah jones

she doesn't elaborate on what she means by "lately" or "a lot more", but we will have to assume somthing was read by her over the last 12 months. quote is particularly good as it is delivered in the context of snarky "i don't watch tv, i don't even have cable" bit.

but it does make ones think about the true nature of love.
for instance, if you say you love food, could you go a year without it without really noticing?

well, then you don't love it norah-stylee, now do you?
